Do your kids think that milk comes from a supermarket? Do they think that sausages come from the freezer? Well if you want to show your kids what real food looks like and how life operated before the invention of the supermarket then send them on down to the Kids Cooking Corner at the Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers and Fine Food Market in Castle Hill for a proper foodie education.
This fabulous farmers market is a veteran on the Sydney farmer's market scene, offering some of the freshest produce that you can get your hands on every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.
Black Castle Events are the organisers of the market and they are keen to show kids a full market experience, giving children almost a paddock to plate education. Beginning on Saturday 24 August the Kids Cooking Corner will begin and it's bound to be very popular (so much so that 24.08.13 is already fully booked).
There will be 2 sessions: the first at 9am and the second at 10am. Each session will last approximately 1 hour. On arrival kids will be fully kitted up in a chef's hat and apron. Then a member of the Black Castle Events team will take the kids around to different stallholders for a chat and to see what is in season. The stall holder who is normally the producer will explain to the kids where the produce has come from and how it was grown. Ingredients will be collected along the way and then it's back to the Cooking Corner to see what can be made. Simple recipes such as fruit kebabs and cupcake decorations will be shown to the kids. Children can either eat what they have made on the spot or take it home with them.
Groups are limited to 12 children per session and bookings must be made in advance. Children aged from 4 – 12 years can attend the sessions. Oh and it is absolutely free. To make a booking email the organisers at: firstname.lastname@example.org
