The freshest produce from the field, delivered to your door

Stock up on all your fresh produce at Hawkes Farmgate store in Boneo, on the stunning Mornington Peninsula. Or shop via their online store and have all their fresh produce conveniently delivered straight to your door.

Hawkes Farmgate Store

This family-owned and operated 56-hectare farm in Boneo, is now managed by 2nd generation farmer, and keen foodie, Richard Hawkes. Richard is the son of Barry Hawkes, who Richard insists "Dad isn't retiring just yet - he enjoys the farm too much!" and Andrea (his youngest sister) is in charge of planting, harvesting and packaging. Though all of the family get involved in some form or another, whether it's in the shop, on the farm, or doing behind the scenes work.

One person I also won't forget to mention is the 'other Barry' - who is the most loyal worker you'll find. Barry has been driving 'his' trusty international truck (which I'm sure is the one of the oldest commercially operating trucks still around! He refuses an upgrade, and loves keeping it on the road.) With likely over 40 years at the farm now, Barry still has no intention of retiring and his daughter who works in the store says "dad would rather move to the farm than stay at home during the Covid-19 lockdown" - with a giggle.

Barry handed the reins over to son Richard - a former Horticulture Australia young leader award recipient, who is passionate about developing the farm further and keeping locals in supply of the freshest Peninsula produce. He's also built a solid reputation with the quality of their produce, supplying Melbourne's finest restaurants.

I have known the Hawkes family since I was a young child, and I can personally vouch that this family is truly passionate about what they do. I've also been enjoying their amazing, snap-fresh produce for years! You seriously cannot go past their potatoes - they are my favourite here. And without question will be the best spuds you've ever tasted!

Best potatoes you will ever taste! Annnnd at under $1kg - Win!!

Whilst they've always sold their produce direct to the public at local community markets, along with commercial produce markets around Australia, the farmgate store gives us all 7 days a week access to some of the Mornington Peninsula's best produce, straight from the field.

Not only do the Hawkes sell their own produce, but they also stock a wide variety of other specialty items that are all locally produced. You'll find artisan bread, flour, honey, olive oil, olives, cheeses, coffee beans, milk, juice, pasta sauces, wine, olive oil, plants and more. Making this farmgate store a convenient one-stop-shop.

If you are visiting the store, and have a little time up your sleeve, then you can always throw in a nearby walk to Bushrangers Bay, Fingal Beach or Cape Schanck. I think you'll agree that these walks provide stunning scenery, and you'll likely see plenty of native wildlife (including kangaroos).

Also keep an eye out on their Facebook page for when they have their hugely anticipated - FREE farm open days. These special, fun-filled family days are where you can pick your own strawberries, have a tractor ride around the farm, play on the jumping castle, taste some produce, and partake in other hands-on activities.

My tip for you is to stock up on Hawkes fresh produce and taste it for yourself. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.

Very informative article Lorraine. Having been brought up on a market garden, I appreciate vegetables straight from the garden, not via, warehouses to supermarkets before you can buy them. Neil.
