Hawker is a small rural town located approximately 378 kilometres north of Adelaide. On our recent trip to the Flinders Ranges, we passed through the town and by chance saw a War Memorial located at Wilpena Road. So we stopped by to have a look.

The Memorial commemorates those who had served in Australian-involved conflicts. The precinct has a paved area with a big Memorial Cross and white seats facing the Cross. Next to it is the Garden of Courage and Sacrifice, planted in 2016 by students of the Hawker area school. There is a plaque that says "Dedicated to those who served… Lest we forget". In the garden is a small white cross with a soldier's hat dedicated to the Unknown Soldier.

There is a replica of an Australian Army field gun that was featured in the film "The Light Horseman".

There are also hand-painted honour rolls, sculptures and artworks and a pathway called "The Walk of Honour". At the end of the pathway is a small pine tree dedicated to the servicemen of the area.

Though a small park, it is very well designed and there are also picnic tables and chairs under shady trees. It is a place for all to reflect, remember and appreciate the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom.

If you do visit the Flinders Ranges, do stop by Hawker to see this special place. Look out for it as you drive out of the town at the start of Wilpena Road.
