Next time you're thinking about where to take the family for a holiday - or just want a getaway with a bunch of friends, then why not hire a houseboat. You know it's something you've always wanted to do, and once you do, you'll want to do it again.
My first experience with a houseboat holiday was many years ago in Queensland, and I have to say it was one of the most relaxing times I've ever spent. Houseboats are like floating luxury apartments. They contain all the necessities like a kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, dining room - just like an apartment, only the views change every moment.

A floating apartment
There are several houseboat hire companies around Sydney which allow you to cruise some of the most beautiful waterways in the world. The Hawkesbury River, Berowra Waters, Brisbane Waters on the Central Coast, or take in the splendour of The Kuringai Chase National Park.
Don't worry if you've never operated a marine vessel in your life - you don't need a boat license. It's quite easy - like steering a bus, only on the water. You'll be briefed on operating your vessel then taken on a short cruise just to make sure you're comfortable at the helm before it's handed over to you.
Here are some of the houseboat hire companies you might like to investigate;

Rates vary depending on the size of the vessel (from 33 feet for 4-6 people to 45 feet which will house up to 10), the time of year, and the number of passengers. But for example, you could easily enjoy a three day getaway from 1 pm on Friday till 4 pm on Sunday in a 45 foot floating luxury home from $1280. When you think about it, if you split the cost between 6 people, it's terrific value.

Indoor dining
All houseboats come with a fully equipped kitchen, so if you do a little grocery shopping beforehand, you can cook while you float.

Fully equipped kitchen
Imagine casting a fishing line off the back of the boat, hauling in a few flathead, and enjoying them for dinner on the barbecue.

Cooking outdoors if you prefer
Most houseboats supply a dinghy, which means you can drop anchor and explore ashore. It's something a little different when it comes to a relaxing holiday, but I can assure you it's one you won't forget.
