The space was studio was spacious, well lit and airy. There was plenty of room to try out the chair routine. The other girls in the class were very friendly and welcoming, which was nice, as it was my first time and they had been doing the class for a while.
We started by doing warm up stretches, then the chairs were brought out. I've always been intrigued by chair dancing and this class did not disappoint.
Sheena would demonstrate the most incredible moves on the chair, moves I didn't think I could actually do.
She demonstrated hopping onto the chair, and then her legs shot out on either side of the chair in one fluid motion. I was sure I couldn't do this, and would scuttle one leg out, then the other. With Sheena's encouragement I was able to execute the choreography, and do it well.
It was the most empowering feeling to actually try these different moves and accomplish them.
We incorporated the different moves on the chair into a lovely routine to a hot hip hop song, which was a cool take on a chair dance routine.
I was so inspired by the class that when I got home, I showed my husband what I had learned and of course he was impressed.
Sheena is one of the top Burlesque performers in Sydney and when you take a class with her, you are getting the expertise of a real dance professional with years of training in classical ballet, jazz, tap, pole dance and hip hop. She is considerate, kind and professional as a dance teacher. I left the class with my brain buzzing, feeling like I'd sparked new creativity and I felt more confident in my body from just one class.

Haus of Pole, where Sheena teaches, has two dance studios in Menai and St Peters. Amber Ray, a renowned pole dance performer of the last 10 years, is the founder of Haus of Pole which of course offers incredible Pole dance classes as well as Burlesque.
Amber Ray had this to say about the benefits of dance she's seen on the women she's taught over the years, " Not just confined to shopping, many women are carrying labels they aren't even sure they had bought. Either consciously or subconsciously, there seems to be so much sigma and labelling around what women do, think, want and act. Either developed socially, through media or peers, I find many women to be consumed with these labels, either identifying themselves inclusive of the stereotype or exclusive of what the assume they need to be a part of.
Through strength exercises, creative dance sequences, aesthetic movement and challenging body awareness, I see pole dance and burlesque change lives. Each week I see women lift each other up, break through barriers and hold their head high as they step out of the studio after class to their daily life, just that little bit more empowered and more than strong enough to break those plastic annoying little plastic cable ties on the label they came in with. "
I would have to say that I agree with Amber Ray. After just one class I left feeling more confident and empowered and ready to go back and learn more.
Haus of Pole is a very unique dance studio in Sydney, in that you will find such a wide array of highly qualified teachers in many unique dance styles. From Pole Dance to Burlesque, Chair and Sexy Stretch classes you will find something that fits your mood and fancy.
Hello Amy, totally enjoyed this article. Just as well it's a ladies' only class as I can just imagine what my wife would say if I came home and draped myself across a chair - she'd probably kill me after she repaired the chair. Thanks for a great read. Regards, Tony
PS I tried to send this before and it failed so if you get 2 from me I apologise.
