I've been getting my morning coffees from Harveys since I started working on James Street in Fortitude Valley and I'm yet to be disappointed. With so many coffee shops and restaurants in the area I've decided to stay loyal to these guys because they are quick, friendly and consistent. The other day, my husband and I walked in to get a takeaway coffee and being a Sunday, this place was packed. Before we even reached the counter, one of the staff spotted us and asked, "A table for two?" Without even thinking, I said "Yes please". My husband turned to look at me with questioning eyes as if to say "Since when are we having breakfast?"
Believe me, I was just as shocked as he was, but we later decided that us working on a Sunday would justify our impromptu breakfast splurge. I blame the mouth-watering breakfasts I walked past causing me to salivate on my way to the counter. I guess neither my stomach nor my tastebuds could resist the temptation of such scrumptious looking breakfasts. And in this instance, you can judge the book by its cover.
Potato and feta roesti
So we sat down and studied the menu. I wasn't particularly wowed or wooed, but was extremely impressed with their large selection of extras you can add to your meal. Besides the outstanding poshness that is Persian soft feta, smoked salmon, and potato and feta roesti, Harveys also offer seven tempting libations to accompany your meal (only after 10am it states). Perhaps if I didn't need to go to work afterwards, I would've ordered one as the grand finale to my breakfast. So not really knowing what I wanted, I randomly picked potato and feta roesti while my husband went with the ricotta-buttermilk pikelets with smoked bacon.
Our coffees arrived first and they lived up to their usual excellent standard. We sipped our coffees as we shared our gossip from the week and before we knew it, our food emerged from the kitchen. After the plates were placed in front of us, we eagerly dug in. Let me tell you, all the elements on my plate together were absolutely sensational: the perfectly cooked poached egg, crunchy potato roesti, sweet creamy corn and I was particularly impressed by the green herby blob on my plate. Even though mine was delicious, I must admit my husband had the winning order this time. Mixing sweet pancakes with savoury bacon was ingenious.
The dining room was bright, spacious, and had sliding glass doors pretty much all the way around the restaurant. They had outdoor seating for those wanting the warm winter sun, or those taking advantage of the cool summer breeze; stools at the bar for those waiting for takeaway coffees, enjoying a quiet after work beverage or a before work coffee; and ample seating in the restaurant area. Its spaciousness is suitable for any occasion whether it'd be a romantic date, birthday lunch, or functions.
I would definitely come back to Harveys for more indulgent breakfasts. Their service didn't deteriorate despite being extremely busy and that was a big plus for me. In addition, the hustle and bustle of diners and staff around my table didn't bother me at all. On the whole this was such a spectacular breakfast that I didn't care I had to go to work afterwards. So thank you, my employer, for allowing me to work on a Sunday.
