The best pies & peas in town
It has been a long time since I stopped at Harry's, but we were in Newcastle for a evening photography shoot on the foreshore and as the weather was less than perfect Newcastle was very quiet and there were only a few people around Harry's, which made for a rare photo opportunity. Everyone was getting hungry by this time, so it was decided that it was tea time.
Harry's Cafe De Wheels Newcastle almost empty!
After browsing the offerings, I decided that I was going for their classic 'pie and mash peas' with a coffee to warm up on this wet night. The others had a mixture from their menu, with their 'tiger pie' being a popular choice and the 'chilli dog' was highly recommended by one of our gang. It was also decided that we will return after a sunrise shoot to try the breakfast menu as the 'bacon and egg' roll looked great.
As we are all keen photographers, we very much enjoyed the photos that are on the walls of the old Bondi tram that is Harry's cafe. It has a bit of the history of Harry's and photos of some of the celebrities who have visited Harry's over the years
The scary part of this trip back in time was when we realised that Harry's has been in Newcastle since 1998, when it become the first franchise for the company and started selling authentic Aussie tucker out of tram #1892 , which once run from Sydney to Bondi. It was rescued from a paddock up the road in Ruterford and refurbished by the Tramways Museum in Sydney, before returning to its final resting place, next to the rail line over the road from the Newcastle Harbour.
