So many Harry Potter events to choose from
Okay, muggles the Harry Potter year is upon us like a sweep of a magic wand. Monday 2nd July 2018 marks 20 years since Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was first published but celebratory events will run the course of the year and well into 2019.

These events will book out quickly. So this list will help you decide which Harry Potter events you need to nab tickets for in advance.

The Potterfest at the Astor Theatre

Source Facebook Astor Cinema

On November 3, The Astor Theatre will hold a marathon of Harry Potter films. This means nine films over 20 hours. This will allow you to see every HP flick in existence. There are the eight movie versions of J.K. Rowling's original seven books (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final novel in the series, was adapted into two feature-length parts) plus the film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The marathon starts at 11 am on Saturday and screens through until the following morning where you stagger out dazed and bewildered but well entertained.

But it isn't just the films  Potterfest will also include plenty of other Potter wizardry and dressing up as your favourite character only adds to the fun. (See towards the end of this piece for costume ideas).

Tickets are $45 each but that is only $5 a film and be warned this event sells out fast.

The marathon will allow you to catch-up on all the HP films before the release of Fantastic Beasts sequel (The Crimes of Grindelwald) comes out in November.

You can book here.

Prisoner of Azkaban™ — in Concert

Based on the third instalment of J.K. Rowling's classic saga, fans can now experience the thrilling screening while the score is played live by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Knowing that good movie are also about the music the MSO have previously also backed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The event is on from November 8–10 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. For more info and to purchase tickets, visit the MSO website. Click here.

This is big! Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany. It is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage.

The play is presented in two parts and intended to be seen in order on the same day (matinee and evening) or on two consecutive evenings.

The critically acclaimed play has won 24 major theatre awards in the UK and it opened on Broadway in April to rave reviews, becoming the most awarded show of the Broadway season.

TRAPT (Escape Room) Alchemy, I & II

TRAPT Escape Room Melbourne

Don't get me wrong, this is not a Harry Potter escape room instead, it's an original magical work of fiction created by the team at TRAPT. But in this escape room, you certainly enter the Magical World of Alchemy.

And anyone who loves HP is likely to enjoy this adventure. You get to practise spells and enchantments and test your magical skills.

The big question is will you be able to discover the mythical substance and Elixir of Life, the Philosopher's Stone, before time runs out?

Drinks at the bar are in keeping with the theme such as Flying Cauldron butterscotch beer, the blueberry and cardamom-flavoured Exhibito Noctis, and Potion of Fire spiced rum.

TRAPT is a fully licensed venue so you must be over 18. If you are under this age you must attend with your own parent, and that parent must accompany you in the TRAPT experience.

Trapt is at The Basement, 377 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, or visit the venue's website for further details. Click here.

All these events will be lot more fun if you dress the part. Fortunately, many HP lovers have been there before you whether it has been making Cosplay costumes, or the countless school book days, or themed birthday parties where Harry Potter and Co put in an appearance. So when you start searching there are plenty of shortcuts for making great costumes. Try the following for starters:

Children will also enjoy HP birthday parties so keep an eye out at your local bookshops. There is one at The Younger Sun in Yarraville on July 31. Click here for tickets.
