We had visitors down from Brisbane for the weekend so took off on an adventure to Yarra Glen. Although the usual destinations in the Yarra Valley are the many picturesque wineries, one of our guests is more partial to a quiet beer or two, so when we found , we decided to pop in a check it out. We each started with a tasting paddle which included 6 different types of beer for $8. This was a great way to sample the beers and decide on what we liked in preparation for a larger beverage over lunch.



The lunch menu has a reasonable selection of meals on offer, including snack foods as well as more substantial dishes. I chose the house made gnocchi with wild mushrooms, walnuts and goats cheese ($28). House made gnocchi is one of my favourite dishes to order when dining out and this version certainly lived up to my expectations. The other members of our party ordered fish and chips ($24), chilli prawns with house made pappardelle ($26) and the steak of the day – a 500g eye fillet on the bone ($48).

All meals were thoroughly enjoyed although we felt the steak was a bit on the pricey side in comparison to the other meals. We also ordered the Extra Special Bitter beer battered onion rings to share and I have to say these were the largest onion rings I have ever had! Nonetheless they were crispy and delicious, served with lemon and aioli.



Overall we had a great experience at Hargreaves, it was quite a busy Saturday with large groups coming in for tastings but the wait staff were still friendly and attentive. Our only complaint would be the two drinks we ordered that never showed up and sure enough were on the bill, although the staff member at the till was quick to remove them once we pointed this out. Definitely worth a stop in if you are in Yarra Glen!
