Fitzroy is known for pubs, cafes, and restaurants, but it also has a bookshop that supports many community groups and acts as a hub for queer literature and culture.

Hares and Hyenas is located at Johnston Street Fitzroy (Phone: 9495 6589). They specialise in novels, magazines, and other literature that has a queer theme. There is also a range of DVDs, and other stock to cater for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender patrons, and their friends.

The store acts as a hub for social and community groups who wish to meet in a literary setting. Exhibits of photos or artworks often line the wall in support of emerging queer photographers and artists.



There is access at the venue to a licensed bar and area that holds a range of music, poetry, social and community events throughout the year.

Johnston Street is easy to get to by public transport. There is a bus that stops nearby, and tram routes 96 or 112 head from the city. Hares and Hyenas are open most days from around 9am to 7pm, apart from a 10am start on Saturdays, and 11.30am on Sundays.
