Happy Meal is located on Grote Street, opposite Adelaide Central Bus Station. It is a tiny place, occupying only half a shop space, facing Hong Kong Asian Grocery Store. We were attracted by their Hong Kong Egg Waffle, known as gai daan jai in Cantonese. The literal translation of gai daan jai is 'little chicken eggs'. Egg waffle is one of Hong Kong's most popular street snacks. Happy Meal sells a honeycomb of egg waffles for around $4.00.
It is interesting to watch the egg waffles being prepared. We ordered the Peanut Butter Egg Waffles. The cook beat peanut butter into the batter, poured the mixture into the waffle mould and set the timer. When the timer beeped, he used a satay stick to thread through the egg waffles and lift the whole rack from the mould. He then put the whole rack into a paper bag and cooled the egg waffles down using a fan. We think the cooling process makes the egg waffles crispy. The egg waffles were light and crispy and the peanut butter mixed through the waffle went nicely with the waffle batter.
Happy Meal sells egg waffles in many different flavours. The store also sells pork knuckles and rice rolls, which customers were eating with great enjoyment. We will visit the store again to savour some of these dishes.
