Hanuman, the monkey king, is a prominent character in the Hindu epic Ramayana. He possesses extraordinary powers and, in the Ramayana story, he can cross oceans, move mountains, and defeat powerful enemies in his quest to find the beautiful Sita following her capture by an evil demon.

Hanuman is also the 'mascot' theme of Darwin's best restaurant and his likeness greets guests as they enter.

Hanuman's menu is based on countries and cultures, such as India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, where the Ramayana story has been adapted, retold, and cherished for generations.

Chef, Jimmy Shu, first opened Hanuman restaurant in Darwin in 1992. His team of expert chefs continue to tempt us with their multi-award-winning menu comprising authentic Asian dishes.

I was a regular visitor during my years of living in Darwin and after a hiatus of three years, mainly due to a certain travel-restricting predicament, I returned recently to enjoy some Hanuman magic.

The inside ambience was relatively unchanged and still welcoming. Friezes depicting the Ramayana story remain to remind and orientate diners to the style of cuisine.

The restaurant has a covered alfresco area to suit the tropical seasons.

Hanuman's famous signature dish is a serving of oysters with fresh tastes of lemongrass, sweet basil, ginger, chilli, and coriander. I've enjoyed it many times but sadly had to resist this time as I was dining alone and had my heart set on the Red Duck curry. I sagely decided that a rich curry and a dozen oysters would be too indulgent for one diner in one sitting.

The curry was just as I remembered; aromatic, piquant, and slightly sweet with succulent, juicy slices of duck. I ordered coconut jasmine rice as the perfect accompaniment.

After dinner, I faced a tough decision as I was already too full to have dessert. Ultimately, I settled on a cocktail as a compromise. I chose a light and fresh Rum, lychee and coconut concoction and it proved the perfect end to a heavenly meal.

I would describe Hanuman as high-end, by Darwin standards, and not necessarily the most affordable restaurant in town. It is, however, iconic and reliably offers authentic flavours and freshness that are not to be missed if you have the opportunity to dine here.
