Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters - Film Review

Two famed witch bounty hunters are commissioned by a town mayor to rescue children who have been kidnapped by witches and execute them.

Don't let the title fool you. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters isn't a G rated remake of the child friendly fairy tale. This is a MA15 horror, full of action, blood and gore. The movie still manages to tell the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel buts thats only the first five minutes. The rest of the 83 minutes shows Hansel and Gretel 15 years later who have now become adult witch executioners.

It stars Jeremy Renner, who plays a merciless, over protective, diabetic Hansel and Gemma Arterton, who plays a smart, fearless and haunted by her past Gretel. As always they deliver strong performances; considering Renner has two Academy Award nominations and one Golden Globe nomination pinned to his name and Gemma has starred in some high grossing films, you wouldn't expect anything less. Famke Janssen, who plays lead villain with heavy facial prosthetics, did some of her own stunts and broke a rib whilst at it.

The back story from there past adds an extra element to the story which is supposed to keep you intrigued however you may find it predictable. It's also tagged as a comedy but there's not enough humour even though it was co-produced by Will Ferrell. It's violent, gory and actioned packed. Don't make the same mistake I did by seeing it in 2D. 3D is the more favorable option. 3/5
