Searching for Lost Children
Searching for Lost Children

We're going to go for a picnic at Hanging Rock," they said, smiling knowingly. What is the significance of that? you say. Hanging Rock is shrouded by an air of mystery, with the tale of a group of girls disappearing on Valentines Day 1900, on a school picnic. The Rock provides the backdrop of this 1967 novel, as well as a subsequent 1975 film adaptation. You can find out more about the origins of Hanging Rock and more at the Discover Centre.

Hanging Rock is located 1 hour North out of Melbourne. The main "activity to do" is the walking trail, which is an easy walk of approximately 2km.

Along the way, you can see the strange, tall, rock formations.

And stop over at the flats for a picnic.

Then make your way up to the summit, and climb up the tall rocks themselves if you're feeling adventurous.

Finally, stop over at the cafe for tea or coffee. Or make your own lunch at the BBQ area, and play some footy on the spacious grassy lawns. Whilst in the area, you can visit the other wineries and natural attractions around the Macedon Ranges.

Practical tips: entrance to the park is priced at $10 per vehicle, but there are free parking areas outside, if you're willing to walk for an extra five minutes.

Beautiful photos. This is a worthwhile day trip either from Melbourne, Daylesford, Ballarat or Bendigo. Gorgeous scenery and walks and a wonderful spot when touring the Macedon Ranges. Don't get lost!

Hanging Rock Summit Walk sounds good - just a monumental pity that the Department responsible for the Sign cannot SPELL. The word is REPEL, and the activity REPELLING - certainly it is not and never has been Rapel or Rapelling. How much did sign cost? They should ask for a refund.

Abseiling also called rappelling, is the controlled descent down a rock face using a rope. Climbers use this technique when a cliff or slope is too steep.
