Legends surround Hanging Rock in Woodend. The red smeared on boulders is said to be the blood of the notorious bushranger "Mad Dog" Morgan.

And ever since the movie Picnic at Hanging Rock, thousands have made the pilgrimage to view the vanishing point of those lost school girls.

Neither stories are true yet it is the eerie nature of the rock which makes even sceptics willing to dispel their disbelief.

But Hanging Rock's power to bewitch your senses can be felt even further afield.

A short drive from the rock is Straw's Lane. Follow the lane until you sight a farmyard gate on the road with a line across the road opposite.

Take care there is no other traffic . Park on the line, turn off the engine and place your car in neutral.

Slowly at first, then with gathering speed your vehicle will roll up hill -- as if a magnetic force was pulling you towards Hanging Rock.

Try a ball, or a plastic bottle the result is the same . The laws of gravity seem to be defied.

There are some who say that this uncanny experience is the magic pull of the rock.

More likely though it is an optical allusion created by the unusual lie of the land.
