You're invited to a birthday party and you get the presents
The Handmade Expo must be the quintessential market, as it features exclusively handmade, baked and grown products, along with a select group of stalls selling vintage wares. And it was named the Best Handmade Market in Australia in 2014. It's been running successfully for ten continuous years, so you know that it is popular for good reasons. I was at the humble inaugural Expo in a shed at the Ipswich Showgrounds in September 2008 and it was special right from the get-go.

It all began with one local business who is now in the national spotlight while helping many other Ipswich businesses create their own success stories. Today, Handmade Expo Market has ten locations across Queensland. They are held monthly at Toowoomba, Airlie Beach, Forest Hill, Ipswich, Mackay, Proserpine, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Strathpine and the Sunshine Coast. A major milestone was achieved in August 2018 when the first New South Wales Handmade Expo Market was held in Lismore in August 2018.

Despite this great expansion, Ipswich Market Coordinator Andrew van der Beek stressed that the monthly Ipswich market is where it all began and local support enabled it to become a true Ipswich success story. "It's the support from our community which has enabled the business to grow across Queensland and interstate," Andrew said. "We've seen many markets come and go over the years and the fact we are celebrating our tenth birthday on 15 September shows how much Ipswich cares for what we do. We're unique as we insist all our stallholders' wares are handmade, baked, grown or created and our customers appreciate the care and attention to detail involved in creating these goods."

The birthday celebrations are a great way for the organisers to thank regular customers and to welcome new visitors to the market. They are kindly giving away 200 goodie bags on market day and they also have birthday cupcakes and some fantastic competition prizes. If you haven't visited the expo before, then this month is the perfect time to go and check out what makes this market so special There will be more than 75 market stalls and delicious food vendors along with live music, steam train rides and kids' games.
