Downtown Hamilton, Ontario has a busy artsy district that includes the Handknit Yarn Studio co-founded by Kate Hand and Tracy Young in 2013.

The Handknit Yarn Studio has just moved into their new location at 144 James Street N, around the corner from their old shop on Cannon St., and a few blocks north of central Jackson Square. They offer year 'round classes in knitting, crochet, weaving, and spinning to everyone interested in yarn arts.

Their new studio location has a fabulous back section with two sky lights to offer great natural lighting for their yarn arts classes, and additional space for their great selection of local Ontario and specialty yarns from Ireland, Iceland, through South America.

Classes begin at 6:00 p.m. and there is one class per week, rotating each yarn art. Participant numbers are kept small, about 6 per class.

For a list of their classes, please see their class schedule here .

Knitting classes cost $45.00 including materials (yarn and needles) & #43 ; HST, via cash, debit, Visa, or Mastercard.

Learn to Spin classes are $110.00 & #43 ; HST. This is for a two-session course and participants learn fibre prep, spinning, plying, and finishing a skein of yarn.

Beginner Crochet classes are $45.00 & #43 ; HST (includes materials).

Beginner Weaving classes are $135.00 & #43 ; HST (includes materials such as a small hardwood weaving frame, tapestry bobbins, and shuttle). This is a two-session course as well where participants learn weaving on a loom frame.

A simple project to try out is knitting a headband. This is a headband I knit from Isaac Mizrahi's Craft yarn called Lexington, using mostly the bamboo stitch without a pattern. This is a chunky yarn that knits up in one sitting and is extremely warm.
