The Handmade Music Festival is a grassroots event created to celebrate the D.I.Y. and the anti-authoritarian in contemporary and avant-garde music and instrument making. If you want to hear electronic toys circuit-bent to make music, or a fruit-controlled synthesiser, then you should definitely check this out.
Curated by a group of Australian sound artists, and featuring both local and international talent, the festival includes performances, workshops and a maker's market. The program can be found
here . The events will be held at three locations:
BUS Projects , KIPL, and
Westspace , during the month of August. Venue information can be found
here . There are some really interesting sounding artists performing and workshopping during the festival. You can read more about them and see photos of their work on
this page .
If you want to hear the weirdest, most underground sounds you'll ever hear, then this festival is for you. If you want to learn the art of circuit-bending (rewiring electronic devices so that they emit unusual sounds), then this festival is for you. If you want to make your own handmade amplified acoustic instrument, then this festival is for you. Even if you don't want to do these things, the Handmade Music Festival is worth checking out, if only for the bizarre-factor.
