I moved to Brisbane in 2009 having through the years lived in The Netherlands, UK, South Africa, Qatar and now Australia. I'm a single mum with three kids always looking for penny pinching ways to have fun and discover new places and things to do.
Thought provoking, yet a light and entertaining theatre show
HANAKO - Desire & Other Secret Weapons is currently showing at Brisbane Powerhouse. A fabulous contemporary theatre performance based on the Japanese legend of a young geisha girl and her desire to break free from her destiny into a true happy future.
HANAKO - Desire & other secret weapons
During the performance you are taken on a journey with Hanako-San a 6 year old girl sold into prostitution, starved, used and discarded. A young woman falling in love, a promise that her young lover will come and save her. A starlet driven into depression. A young woman's desire to be free, and loved. A thought provoking evening that manages to remain light and fun. Sad but enjoyable, leaving you feeling uplifted when it ends.
Ancient Japan intertwines with historical France and current day Brisbane to acknowledge that this story, though fictional and only part based on truth, is a very real and current issue faced by many young women today.
The Visy theatre leans a true intimacy to the performance that enhances your experience, making you feel part of the story. The actors do a fabulous job of engaging and encouraging the audience to embrace the story. Bringing laughter and fun into this play was magnificently orchestrated by Katherine Lyall-Watson & Caroline Dunphy.
If you are after a different and intimate theatre experience, Hanako will not disappoint! Make sure you arrive early as to not miss the pre-show display in Visy Theatre foyer. The Alto bar and restaurant offer food and drink, which you can enjoy pre-show whilst looking out over the beautiful Brisbane River. A must do evening during the Brisbane festival.
