Imagine a place where all members of the public are welcome to meet, read, study, pass the time, hear a story, play games, use the internet, lay on the grass, or see an art exhibition, and you can do all this without paying a cent. You can enjoy all these and many more activities at the Hamra Centre Library , located on 1 Brooker Terrace, in the suburb of Hilton. It is also known as the West Torrens Library.

This library was planned, designed and built for the entire community. It is spacious and filled with natural light, instead of walls. The library is surrounded by thick glass panels, which give it an even more open feel and amazing views of the next door park and council building.

Children of all ages can enjoy an array of activities: story and rhyme time, songs, dancing and crafts. Some of these activities involve parents, so you can connect with your little one and meet other parents in area. For kids ages 5-11, there is homework help and reading challenges.

The library offers a dedicated space for babies and toddlers, filled with age appropriate books, table activities, special tiny chairs and small book shelves so tiny hands can reach materials.

Teenagers have also been thought of. Book shelves are lined with graphic novels, comics and age appropriate literature, cool lounges, beans bags and floor pillows to sit and have a chat, enjoy a read or do some homework on. There are also video games and teen magazines.

Adults really take the biggest piece of cake here, as the entire middle section is dedicated to any kind of book you can think of: romantic novels, animals, art and craft, health, history, classics, gardening, crime and mystery, just to mention a few.

There is also a music section where you can find anything from Christmas Carols to Bluegrass, Indie and Opera. Right next to music, you will find movies and documentaries, where once again diversity rules, so explore and enjoy!

The City of West Torrens is one of Adelaide's most culturally diverse suburbs. This is truly reflected at the Hamra Centre Library , as it hosts an entire section of books in different languages. Spanish speakers will be pleased to see a large amount of reading material, movies and even board games available (probably the largest Spanish section I have seen so far).

If you are looking for a new activity, book club, exercise group, new hobby or short courses, simply approach staff or have a look at their community notice board. Most of the events or activities are sponsored by the local council, and therefore are very cheap or free!

This space will amaze you, as it also has a small auditorium just as you enter. Regular art exhibitions, small community events and workshops are also held there.

The Hamra Centre, also offers an number of services, which can be booked with a simple phone call: Justice of the Peace, meeting and studying rooms, computer and internet access, basic tools to borrow, toy library, newspapers, photocopier and printer, wireless network and financial counselling.

This library is not just a huge source of books, information and learning materials, but a space where every individual is considered, nurtured and encouraged to be themselves, a place to learn, laugh, discover, play, see the community that surrounds us and become part of it in such a welcoming space.
