Hamnet, a delightfully magical production. Brought to you by the Dead Centre theatre company and the Brisbane Festival, Hamnet is playing at the Cremorne Theatre 8-12 September.

Young Hamnet (Aran Murphy) is an eleven-year-old boy who is trying to find his father and puzzle out some pretty big questions. The biggest question is one posed by his very famous father: "To Be or Not To Be" (ref: Shakespeare's Hamlet). Circling around this central question Hamnet explores themes that have troubled humans for generations.

To be or not to be a connected parent? William Shakespeare, who left behind his home and children (including Hamnet) to pursue his career, would be forced to face that question when Hamnet, his eleven-year-old son dies in 1596.

To be or not to be alive? With young death comes crushing grief. Shakespeare, in facing this grief, questions the very meaning of life.

To be or not to be a great person? Does a body of work that lives through centuries make a man great? Is our work more important than our relationships?

To be or not to be different? While the world changes and technology alters our experience and understanding of the universe, do we really change? Or are we fundamentally struggling with the same issues that have always plagued humans?

These are big questions and may well leave you feeling like this play is a little too. So let me give you three reasons to invest an hour and 40 odd dollars on Hamnet .

1.Written and directed by Bush Moukarzel, Hamnet explores these big themes with humour and sensitivity. You will be thinking about this play for days.

2. Masterful, stage management (Barbara Hughes), lighting (Stephen Dodo), sound (Kevin Gleeson) and AV (Jose Miguel Jimenez) create a truly immersive and magical experience. You will be delighted and intrigued by the pure cleverness of this production.

3. Aran Murphy, playing 11 year old Hamnet, delivers a courageous and truly touching performance. When he asks if you will be his father, you will want to jump up on stage, tuck him under your wing and take him home.
