A green area in a busy suburb
Hamilton Park is located in the vibrant and upscale suburb of Hamilton in Brisbane. It is a small park delimited by Kingsford Smith Drive, Harbour Road, a few new buildings on the south side and Bretts Wharf ferry terminal.

In recent years, the suburb of Hamilton has been through a transformation with the construction of many new buildings and a pedestrian walkway which connects with Newstead, Teneriffe, New Farm and the City walking along the Brisbane River.

Hamilton Park has survived the heavy urbanisation and today it offers green grass, trees, monuments and informative signs. Hamilton Park also offers respite from the busy Kingsford Smith Drive. It is a place to walk the dog and it allows to connect with the pedestrian walk away and Brett Wharf.

Nearby on the west side of the park, there is a sculpture by Kenji Uranishi which has the title 'Magnificent Flying Machine', 2019. Kenji Uranishi art was inspired by two iconic Australian aviators and Hamilton local Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Maudi Lores Bonney.

The art structure resembles beacons, reflecting the concept of being guided home when arriving at Brisbane Airport. The beacons take inspiration by the propellers on the aircraft the local Australian aviators used to fly their uncharted journeys.

The propellers, when moulded and twisted, create forms resembling a butterfly's chrysalis, a metaphor for life's challenges and constant transformations. The artist connects the brave pioneering passionate aviators with the inspiring and determined journey of an orchard swallowtail butterfly, the largest butterfly common in Brisbane.

In Hamilton Park, there is a sign about Eagle Farm Women's Prison.

Eagle Farm Women's Prison was established in 1829 and from 1830, the female prisoners were moved from Brisbane Town to Eagle Farm to reduce fraternization with colony soldiers and officials. Punishment for women included confinement and head shaving.

Women were occupied in tasks like needlework, chipping weeds, digging furrows and harvesting crops. For the well-behaved prisoners, they may have been tasked as a crow minder to protect the crops.

By 1836, more than 70 female convicts were housed at the settlement. By 1837, all the female prisoners from Brisbane Town were relocated to Eagle Farm. By November 1839, the Eagle Farm Women's Brisbane was closed and the penal settlement officially closed on 10 February 1842 and became a government cattle station.

The Eagle Farm Women's Prison site is located at 116 Lamington Avenue, Eagle Farm. It remains one of only six surviving in Brisbane from the convict period. It is now a Heritage-listed place.

On the west side of Hamilton Park, near the barbeque, is the monument that commemorates QANTAS and the United States Air Force for their involvement during the WWII.

Front Inscription

GATEWAY TO VICTORY

ON DECEMBER 24th 1941 the Royal Australian Air Force, QANTAS Empire Airways and the United States Air Force completed their first joint operation when QANTAS flying boat CENTAURUS serving with the R.A.A.F. as A18-10 landed on Hamilton Reach carrying 22 pilots from the U.S. 27th Bomb Group (Dive) and 5 Pilots of the U.S. 24th Pursuit Group who were withdrawn from the Philippines. These U.S. pilots together with R.A.A.F. facilities and personnel organised and trained the first bomber and fighter Squadrons that expanded to become the U.S. Fifth Air Force that with R.A.A.F. Command contributed decisively in the campaign that brought Victory in the Pacific. Throughout the war QANTAS continued its transport and maintenance until the end on the 15/8/1945.
