Breathtaking Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is an incredible place to visit. Part of the Whitsunday Islands, it boasts turquoise waters, lush forests and of course the Great Barrier Reef. There is a tranquil feeling on the island as only golf carts are allowed, so there is no hectic traffic and that leaves you feeling very relaxed and peaceful. The air feels very clean as well because there are no cars.

Cockatoos come to visit every morning at our hotel room
We decided the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef was by helicopter. I felt nervous getting into the helicopter as I'd never been in one before. Seeing the picture of Oprah taking the same helicopter ride when she was here in December of 2010 left me feeling slightly more assured.

Oprah enjoyed her helicopter ride
Our pilot, Dave, was extremely friendly and explained everything we would need to know about our 35 minute helicopter ride, such as taking pictures with the windows closed. If you put your hand out the force from the wind can snap your wrist and break it and of course you would lose the camera. I definitely decided to heed that advice.

As we went up the Whithaven Beach came into view, and what a gorgeous image that was. We flew over turquoise seas, with beautiful white sand banks in between small islands. My favourite part was seeing the Heart Reef, so named because it is a heart shaped reef. The only way to see it is from above, as the area is protected and no boats are allowed to travel there.
After our delightful 35 minutes in the air we landed safely with the images of the Great Barrier Reef from above forever emblazoned in our memories and our hearts.
