On a weekend away at the Grampians, I stumbled across this beautiful historic Botanic Gardens in Hamilton that I just have to share. Rich in history, this garden was first planted in 1870. The design and layout was the work of William Guilfoyle, who was also curator of Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The complete garden is classified by the National Trust of Victoria. Taking up four hectares, this garden was a delight to stroll through. Eight tree species found in the garden are listed in the Register of Significant Trees.

In this garden you will also find bird and animal enclosures, water fountains, a playground, rotunda and barbeque facilities. If you love nature or taking a stroll through gardens, this is definitely worth a visit. With many grassy areas it's perfect for pulling out a rug and a picnic with the family, or just relaxing solo with a good book. Being such a well established garden, there are many native birds that live there, making it perfect for bird watching. Also, there are many flowering species of plant and some resident peacocks. So if you love nature photography this is definitely a must.

Located not too far from the Grampians, why not make the travel to next time you are in the area and enjoy the town of Hamilton along with its historic gardens.
