Trunk or treat?
AWA Facebook

It has always been a bit debatable whether kids should go trick or treating around their local neighbourhood.

In America, a lot of church and community groups have solved the problem by starting an alternative called Trunk or Treat.

Instead of people decorating their houses, they decorate their car boots or their trunks as they call them.

Children walk from trunk to trunk to check out the decorations, some of which can be incredibly innovative, and get their special treats.

It's a whole lot of fun and a safe way to celebrate Halloween in a family friendly environment.

Thanks to the American Women's Association (AWA) we now have this event in Melbourne.

Every year the AWA runs the spooktacular event to help raise money to benefit the Children's Bioethics Centre at The Royal Children's Hospital.

Over the years, the organisation has raised over $4 million as well as assisted thousands of American women to connect with each other as they make their home in Melbourne.

The day is a host of American fun with a contest for best decorated boot, a costume parade with prizes for adults and children.

For Australians it is fascinating to see just how the American celebrate Halloween. The day is a real sharing of their cultural heritage.

Kids and parents come as ghosts, goblins, princesses and superheroes

It is a fabulous event for young children with carnival games and trick or treating, entertainment, raffles and competitions.

It is worth bringing a blanket as seating is limited and there are plenty of chances to buy picnic style food from the American Style Food Trucks with their hot dogs and hamburgers and pop (lemonade).

The AWA invites Americans and 'Friends of America' to join with them in making a difference.
