With the cost of living always on the rise, most people try to be a little more economical with their weekly food bills. Chicken, mince and legumes are often on the menu but as for steak. Well, what's that? There's a new definition. An expensive item reserved for special occasions.

Which is why a lot of punters make good use of the special steak nights scattered around Melbourne at various pubs. These are usually on the pub's quiet nights such as on Mondays and Tuesdays. For customers, it means a night out and a steak meal for around the $12 to $15 dollar mark.

It would be hard to do it cheaper at home and then you would also have to do all the cooking and worse still the cleaning up. Most pubs aren't making anything on the meal but they know you will have a few drinks and hope that will boost their takings. It will also get people to leave their Netflix dens and come outside.

But the steaks at these pubs are often small, not very good quality and the plate is loaded with chips (you know the saying, 'cheap as chips' ?) with a couple of pieces of limp green salad to complete the not very nice picture. It is not the same steak meal they might serve if you went on another night and ordered a full-priced steak meal. I've tried a few of these nights and there are very few I'd go back for.

That was until I discovered half-price steak nights on Mondays at Beer Deluxe in Hawthorn. Here you aren't ordering an inferior steak. Instead, you are ordering the steaks they nomally serve but you are only charged half the normal price. The result is you get their locally source, good quality meat but at quite a saving.

You can choose betweeen rump, porterhouse, Scotch fillet or the king of beasts, the 500 gram t-bone.

The normal prices are:

250G RUMP 23
250G PORTERHOUSE 29
300G SCOTCH FILLET 38
500G t bone 48

But on Mondays, this comes down to $11.50 for the rump, $14.50 for the porterhouse, $19 for the porterhouse and $24 for the t-bone. They are all served with a crisp salad rather than a scattering of limp lettuce. Of course, they have the obligatory chips.

Given the price I was almost floored when the bartender asked me what sauce I would like with my steak. Most pubs slug you a few extra dollars when you order sauces but here they are included. Choices included red wine, peppercorn, mushroom or garlic butter. The steak was excellent and tasted even better given the prices and the lovely venue.

Beer Deluxe tends to be quite young and hip. A streamlined place with plenty of wood, modern architecture, good music and really friendly well trained bartenders who know their beers. While it can be packed to the brim on Friday and Saturday nights, on Mondays it normally quiet. So, a good place to catch up with a friend for a chat.

On this occassion, I went with my son as he has moved out of home and it was a chance for a catch up in a place he was going to enjoy. And I ended up enjoying it as well. For me, it was great because it meant a meal out without a huge bill. Plus, it saved me from cooking and cleaning up.

The Monday night steak night deal is not offered at all Beer Deluxes. You can get them at Albury Beer Deluxe and the one in Hawthorn.

They are located at:

329 Burwood Rd
Hawthorn
(03) 9810 0092 (close to the station and trams)

&

491 Kiewa Street, Albury New South Wales
(02 )8322 2070 (Good if you are passing through on your way to Sydney)

So, have you found any great steak nights out there where the pubs or restaurants don't compromise on the quality? Add, them to the bottom if you have as I'll be sure to try them. As will other readers.
