Fresh local baby calamari - the best in area - photo Joe Hillebrand all other photography by Tricia Ziemer
Finding delicious, fresh calamari at a reasonable price is not as easy as you would think in Melbourne. Sometimes I order calamari and it seems like compressed seafood and not true calamari. Has anyone else experienced this?
Renovated Half Moon Pub with restaurant and dog friendly beer garden
But I just happened to be down at Brighton Beach, catching up with a friend and we popped into the Half Moon Pub. I placed my order of calamari with trepidation but I was in for a treat and a half. I boldly ordered local baby calamari with rocket and aioli. It was cooked perfectly, seasoned to perfection and so moreish. It brought all the true flavours of the sea to my senses with each morsel.
Half Moon Pub was renovated in 2010 and it is a step above your average pub, with a menu that caters to both casual and restaurant dining. You can also order Italian style pizza at the bar to share with mates.
The fine dining area of the pub, exposing the stunning original brickwork, has an extensive range of wines for every palate to complement the diverse menu featuring seafood risotto, burgers, pizza and delectable steak.
This was such a nice discovery. Try the seafood linguine which is a seafood feast of white fish, prawns, local baby mussels, clams, calamari, chilli, lemon & garlic oil. See their full menu at www.halfmoon.com.au/menu
Don't miss the special's night for a treat at mate's rates
When I complimented the chef via the manager on the day, Joe Hillebrand, he said pleased, "This is common compliment we receive and people come back regularly just for our calamari." His service was seamless and as I watched, it seemed to me he managed the pub to perfection.
I can highly recommend this the perfect pub for a family dinner, or as a stop on the way to the beach or back, or a late night stop and feast.
Why call it BABY Calamari?
It sounds horrible - like earring Babies!
It is very difficult to find good pan fried or deep fried Calamari anywhere recently. Plenty of awful stuff out there being sold that should not be allowed on a plate let alone served to paying customers.
Looking forward to trying this dish. Will ask for the calamari - without roadside weeds on the side. They are dry, unappetising, and unnecessary.
