Still Showing, 84 years on

Half Dozen Group of Artists is proudly presenting its 84th annual exhibition this June at HDG-Artists Studio in Sherwood.

The Half Dozen Group is one of the largest and longest established artists groups in Queensland, exhibiting in Brisbane since 1941. Members are professional and hobby artists from all walks of life and all ages. Running from Wednesday 4 June to Tuesday 10 June 2025, this popular annual event is FREE to attend.

The Half Dozen Group of Artists was formed in 1941 by six former members of the Royal Queensland Art Society; today membership has grown to over 90 esteemed artists and the group regularly hosts a range of well-established events throughout the year including exhibitions and workshops. The annual exhibition held by the Half Dozen Group of Artists is one particular highlight as it gives members a chance to exhibit and sell their work to the wider public.

This year’s exhibition will feature a wide range of art styles on display, including portraits, landscapes and abstract works. An additional feature of the exhibition is the Lambert Wall; a themed collection of paintings painted on the same size canvas. The concept was proposed by a popular and long-term HDG-Artist member, Dixie Lambert. This year’s theme is "A Study in Blue."

Whether you are a fellow artist or art enthusiast, this is a great opportunity to support the local arts scene. The exhibition will be open to the public from 4 to 10 June 2025. Entry is free. The HDG-Artists Studio is located at 37 Quarry Road, Sherwood.

Opening times are: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, from 9am to 5pm; Saturday, Sunday from 8am to 5pm; Monday from 9am to 5pm and Tuesday 9am to 11am.

History of the Half Dozen Group of Artists
The Half Dozen Group of Artists, originally comprised six members of the Royal Queensland Art Society who broke away and formed their own group in 1940. The main advocate for the move seems to have been Lilian Pedersen. The other five members were Mona Elliott (the first chairperson), Frank Sherrin, Rosalie Wilson, Leonard Shillam and Ann Ross. Its objective was to infuse vitality, professionalism and individuality into Queensland art activities. Their first meeting was held on April 9 1941 in a little attic in George Street, Brisbane and their first exhibition was held in the Randall Room at the Brisbane City Hall the same year.

Through the 1940s, 50s and 60s this nucleus of six artists was joined by a "younger generation" of aspiring artists, including Lloyd Rees, Margaret Olley, L. J. Harvey, Margaret Preston, Kenneth McQueen, Jon Molvig, Melville Haysom, William Robinson, Donald Friend, Vida Lahey, Daphne Mayo, Roy Churcher, Mervyn Moriarty and John Rigby. These artists were later to become some of the most recognised Queensland artists of our time.

Membership was initially restricted to a maximum of 35. Artists wishing to join were accepted upon invitation and were expected to present a folio of work for adjudication. Today, the criteria for membership centres on an applicant's genuine desire to develop skill and understanding, and if possible, to participate in self-development through the weekly and other workshops provided.

In 1975 The Half Dozen Group established its Studio in the "cellar" beneath the church hall of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point. This venue had been the stamping ground of many now well-known artists -  Irene Amos (a Vice Patron), Jon Molvig and Roy Churcher to name just a few.

The HDG-Artists Studio
In October 2014 HDG-Artists moved to a permanent new home at 37 Quarry St, Sherwood, a heritage building leased from Brisbane City Council. Prior to this last relocation, the group's studio was at Montrose, Consort St Corinda. The group had occupied a long-term studio at St Mary's, Kangaroo Point between 1975 and 2011. Since making the Quarry Street studio home, the HDG-Artists has made significant upgrades to the studio, including professional lighting for the interior's work and exhibition area, along with other improvements to make it a modern, practical art space.

HDG-Artists runs untutored sessions in portraiture and life drawing four days a week, as well as a weekly, informal painting workshop every Tuesday. It also holds regular professional development workshops, and provides exhibiting and social opportunities for members. Everyone is welcome and all that is needed is a love of art!
