There's a lot to be festive about when you're in Sydney, and this is probably why there's a ton of festivals throughout the year. Whether you're celebrating coffee, noodles, dance, lights etc., Sydney likes to celebrate.

Here's one festival that takes you beyond the regular Sydney festival trail and into the heart of the City of Cultural Diversity, right into Haldon Street, Lakemba.

The 16th annual Haldon Street Festival , on Saturday, 22nd August, will welcome more than 30,000 Sydneysiders to Lakemba and treat locals and visitors alike to sizzling camel burgers, entertaining cultural performances and an Arabian bazaar-like atmosphere with 100 market and food stalls to visit.

The festival will run from 10am to 4pm, and include entertainment from:

  • The West African Drum and Dance group
  • Arabian Nights Band
  • Gang of Brothers
  • Cuban Rhythms
  • Mexidahlia
  • Cedars of Lebanon

  • ... and much more!

There will also be rides and a baby animal farm for kids, and, in an event that must definitely be seen to be believed, festival camels who walk Haldon Street as part of the Haldon Street Parade.

Food at the Haldon Street Festival

No festival is complete without food, and there will be plenty of international cuisine to choose from. You can also take part in the Taste Lakemba Food Trails. Run by the people behind Taste Food Tours , Foodie tour guides will be on hand to take you through Haldon Street's local businesses to sample some of the cuisine in the area. Each tour is only $15 each (plus booking fee), and can be booked online. Your booking will also grant you a 20% off discount code (which you'll receive on the day), enabling you to book other Taste Food Tours.

There are two tours to choose from at the Haldon Street Festival:

    Falafel and Co Food Crawl
Explore the best of Lakemba's Lebanese cafes, and finish your tour with sweets from the Cocos Islands.

    Bengali Food Crawls
Learn more about the Lakemba's local Bengali community and get to know the flavours and cuisine of this Indian subcontinent cuisine.

You'll also be able to meet Channel Nine's Hot Plate contestants Aron and Vanessa from Rock Salt, a contemporary restaurant and bar in the southern suburbs of Sydney serving modern Australian cuisine. For those of you who are fans of the show, you'll know that Aron and Vanessa make the perfect team, with Aron as the Head Chef and Vanessa running front of house. Perhaps they'll give you tips on how to be celebrity foodies!
