Canine chaos and lots of laughs with Hairy Maclary
There are very few children, or parents for that matter, who are not acquainted with the delightful Hairy Maclary series of books by the New Zealand author, Lynley Dodd. First appearing in 1983 in Dodd's popular picture book, 'Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy', the lovable canine protagonist of the same name has since delighted generations of readers in a total of twelve books, with nine more about his funny animal friends, including the dalmation Bottomley Potts, the Old English sheepdog Muffin McClay and the dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm. Tension is created throughout the series in the persona of the evil cat, Scarface Claw, who is always on the look-out for a way to cause trouble for the hapless Hairy Maclary and his comrades.
Published as picture books which adult readers can share with their young friends and family, the series is frequently treasured as much by mums and dads as by the youngsters for whom they are written. Therefore, there will be a lot of excited grown-ups (not to mention, kids) here in Perth when word gets out that 'Hairy Maclary and Friends' will soon be arriving in town in the form of a live performance at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. Playing for just four days (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th of October, 2012), the show will coincide with the school holidays and will be a magical treat for children – and adults – of all ages. Featuring much loved characters with whom they are already familiar, and lots of singing and dancing, the show will also be a great introduction for children to the wonderful world of live theatre.
The fact that 'Hairy Maclary and Friends' comes direct from sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House and the Edinburgh Festival further confirms its timeless appeal, and the charm which has transcended barriers of culture and generation. Undoubtedly, the trend will continue in Western Australia, so it's probably a good idea to book your family's tickets early and therefore avoid disappointment.
Hairy Maclary and Friends' will be showing at the Regal Theatre, at 474 Hay Street, Subiaco from Wednesday, 3rd until Saturday, 6th October, 2012. Shows are approximately 55 minutes in length, and apart from a Wednesday evening performance at 6pm, all others are timed during the day at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.
As could be expected, tickets aren't cheap ($34.90 for everyone over one year of age), but since Hairy and his pals are only making a brief appearance here in Perth, I dare say it will be a necessary sacrifice. Tickets can be purchased from the theatre's box-office from 9am until 1.45pm, or from 2.45pm until 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, or on the theatre booking hotline at 1300 795 012. Online tickets can be purchased through Ticketek. For more information regarding tickets and dates, please call 1300 795 012 or check out the production's official webpage.
