Hairy Canary's Relative

Names of restaurants amuse me and they are often very self-explanatory. For example, a bloke who has three daughters owns the Three Daughters cafe in Ivanhoe. The Yum Yum Thai restaurant in Northcote is… you guessed it… really yummy. I think I know why, but I wish I'd asked what compelled the owner to name his cafe Hairy Little Sista. My kids got a laugh out of the name, especially my son.

I do know it's the younger sibling of Hairy Canary, which has a good reputation for imaginative tapas and an extensive drinks menu.

With a different menu to its sibling, Little Sista has a North African feel, Spanish influence and Mexican persuasion. They serve delicious dishes such as eggplant and polenta chips. My favourite of these two was the eggplant chips that were freshly cooked, crispy on the outside and cooked perfectly on the inside. These were served with a tasty side dish. This was only $12.50 per serve. We ordered both of the exotic chips and between the two of us we didn't finish them all. If you're not very hungry I suggest you just order one serve.

Eggplant chips. They taste even better than they look

The lunch and dinner menu includes goodies like crunchy lemon pepper calamari with a aioli $13, southern fried chicken nibblers $15, cheeseboard selection (three cheeses) $26, chefs specials, antipasto selection including vegetables, meats, dips, cheese, bread and crackers for $29.50. They also serve burgers, Mexican bowls, salads and deserts such as self-saucing caramel pudding with salted caramel, berries and pistachio soil $14.

The breakfast menu is served until 12 PM with many free range, organic and homemade items such as organic spiced fruit bread with Little Sista's nutella for just $7.80.

If you order pizza it will be cooked at Hairy Canary and delivered to Little Sistas on demand. One of Little Sista's most popular dishes is Middle Eastern style Buffalo wings with French blue cheese served with dipping sauce. The paella and share plates are also popular choices.

I ordered my hot chocolate very strong, which it was, but I also like it very hot. I was pleasantly surprise that when I asked for my drink to be zapped in the microwave they insisted on making me a fresh hot one with no hesitation.

This bar and cafe has a funky feel with staff who make you feel welcome. There's definitely something about Little Sista that makes you want to come back. I'd like to revisit her for the third time to sample a selection from their interesting tapas menu.
