I was first introduced to the Hairy Canary in 2012 as a night venue. It was a night out with the girls and this was our first cocktail bar for the evening. As a newbie to the world of cocktails, the staff were happy to explain to me what each of the drinks were on the menu. When I still couldn't make a decision they walked me through a decision making matrix that went something along the lines of, do you like sweet drinks? Do you like fruit in your drink? Each answer I gave helped to narrow the field available until one floated to the surface as the obvious choice.

It was the beginning of a great night. The menu was simple but sumptuous, their speciality being the wood fired thin pastry pizzas, at least in my eyes. The place was alive with people and energy, as people chatted, drank ate and moved on.

[ADVERT]This Saturday I returned without my posse of girls for a quiet brunch, although there was no alcohol being served and it would take another hour before the wood-fired oven would be hot enough for one of their pizzas. But at least I wasn't teetering in heels as I made my way up the stairs to reach the restaurant on the first floor. No need for heels during a casual day out.

I wasn't disappointed. The staff were friendly and non obtrusive as I had remembered them, although the place was much less cramped with people, and in spite of the breakfast menu being so short, it seemed to cater for everyone. The atmosphere was upbeat, and the music not too loud. The decor was artistic which gave the place a slightly upmarket feel without losing its authenticity. Not far from the station on the corner of Little Collins Street and Royal Lane and, I kid you not, when I looked out the window I did see pigs with wings flying past. Obviously the place to be.
