Hains & Co Cocktail Bar

There seems to be an exciting new bar popping up, somewhere in Adelaide, every week. Hains & Co opened over a year ago and flew beneath my radar until very recently when I visited for the first time. Now that I have found it, Hains is firmly established in my drinkery repertoire.
You'll find it at 23 Gilbert Place in a classic old building with tall ceilings and a highly polished timber floor. There's a warm and welcoming ambience as well as a groovy vibe to be enjoyed here.
The decor follows a nautical theme featuring lots of brass, chunky ropes and portholes.
The entrances to bathrooms are gender indicative by way of mermaids and mermen which appeals to my sense of whimsy.
You can choose to sit inside in a comfy booth or perch yourself on a barstool for a better vantage point.
Alternatively, Hains & Co offers an al fresco seating area where you can smoke a cigar should the mood take you.
It's not a compulsory activity but cigars are available for purchase should you feel the need.
My drinking buddy and I chose to pass on the cigars during our visit. Instead, we ordered a drink each and settled in right next to an anchor. I chose Ounce Gin, produced in nearby Thebarton, with Cascade tonic and an orange slice as garnish. He chose a Naughty-Lass Ale (he would).
The menu looks a bit like a ship's log and lists enticing bar snacks to accompany the array of drinks on offer. The 'Sea Pigs' were tasty - fat, homemade sausage rolls accompanied by a tantalising tomato and shiraz chutney.
There's plenty more to try so I'll be heading back there soon. Who knows, I may give a cigar a try.
