Kingsway in Glen Waverley is known for its myriad of restaurants and dining options. Parking is difficult but the people still flock to this street because it is lined on both sides with the tastiest food that Glen Waverley has to offer, all within a convenient five-minute walk from The Glen Shopping Centre as well as Glen Waverley Railway Station.
Hainan Chicken is a recent restaurant opened this year with its specialty being, you guessed it: Hainan Chicken. This rice dish is wildly popular in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, and it traces its roots back to the Hainan province of China.
On a Sunday afternoon, I was lucky to get a single seat at the window as the place was full to the brim with customers. The lime green interior gives a very cheery feeling and really brightens up the room. Hanging pendants keep everything well lit as below them a flurry of activity takes place.
After deciding your order in front of the big menu, you order at the counter and bring your number stand to your table to wait for the food to arrive, expectantly and with a craving stomach.
The menu options are so numerous that you could quite possibly make this a regular eating spot without running out of new options for a while.
For $13.80, I had to try their Hainan Chicken with Rice. It came with a seaweed, wombok, and spring onion clear soup. Other condiments are self-serve including a thick dark soy sauce, chilli sauce, and ginger puree. Mix all these together and dab onto the chicken for enhanced flavour and depth.
The silky smooth skin of the chicken pieces were delicious and it felt very lean - so health conscious diners can eat the skin without regret. The bones are cooked all the way through so you do not get the pink/red tinge that is present in many Hainan Chicken dishes elsewhere. Some may argue that it means the chicken is slightly overcooked.
