"It was 1st May 1915, when Alfred E Haigh opened the doors of the very first Haigh's Chocolates store at number 34 King William Street, Adelaide. Alfred began adding his own flavour to the industry and in 1917 he started producing chocolate-covered fruit centres, which we still make today."
I first fell in love with
Haigh's Chocolates when my boyfriend brought me back a giant Haigh's frog from Melbourne, where he had been on a business trip. After that first giant frog, every Melbourne trip involved a visit to the Haigh's store - so I was absolutely delighted when Haigh's opened their first fine chocolates store at the Strand Arcade in Sydney.
Haigh's Chocolate Range
Haigh's has a great range of boxed chocolates, loose chocolates, blocks, bars, pastilles, chocolate confectionery, novelty chocolates, a gourmet range as well as a gift and seasonal range.
The novelty chocolates are really fun. Haigh's makes a great giant frog - in milk and dark chocolate - as well as a smaller (but still large) version. These make a great gift for young and old. Other novelties include oversized chocolate fish and brumbies. Haigh's also has some cute and cuddly teddy bears which make a wonderful gift.
The chocolate coated almonds and chocolate coated macadamias are a staple, along with the fruit and nut mix. In the fruit range, my recommendations are the orange chocs and berry chocs (just like mini-cherry-ripe bites).
One of the perks of shopping at Haigh's is that the chocolatiers are very generous with handing out samples at the counter - so you'll be sure to get to taste something new on each visit.
Haigh's Confectioneries
If you're not into chocolate, Haigh's also produce a range of confectionery including some delicious chewy traditional toffees, french jellies and toffee brittle. Personally, I really like the toffees - they are soft and chewy, but don't get stuck in your teeth.
Haigh's Chocolate Recipes
One of the best features of the Haigh's website is their
Recipe page, which contains lots of easy to follow recipes for amazing chocolate desserts.
