I have to admit, anyone that subscribes to my articles must think I just bush walk and visit chocolate shops. Well, it's mostly true, I am addicted to both, so yet again another chocolate shop we visited and yes, it was a lovely way to spend some time in front of the fire with a hot chocolate whilst we waited for the rain to clear before going to the 1000 Steps and Lyrebird Track at Ferntree Gully.

We were on our way to Montrose to pick up a camera case we bought on Gumtree, so we decided whilst we were over that way we would go along Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd to the start of the 1000 Steps car park. It was raining quite steadily and Stef was not looking all that enthused about walking in the rain. So keeping an eye out for somewhere to stop and wait for it to pass, I noticed this chocolate sign; how could we resist visiting a chocolate shop?

A quick u-turn saw us battling for a car park, seems we weren't the only ones with the same idea!

We ran towards the front door for shelter and quickly went inside to the warmth. Inside there are chocolates on either side of the shop with a display cabinet as the counter and gift boxed chocolates placed centrally in the shop. The smell is amazing and what's great is you can taste test all the fillings that are normally inside the chocolates for free. There are little pump handles next to the chocolates for sale that you push down on and fill some into the plastic tasting tubs that are provided to help choose the chocolates you will like.

The shop is much bigger than we initially thought, with only two tables and a lounge in the shop area, we thought it would be difficult to get a table, however there is an extension that is a full dining room, complete with a fire place that overlooks the gardens. On a nice day the gardens would be a lovely place to sit and enjoy a hot chocolate or coffee.

We all ordered a hot chocolate which we thought was good value at $3.75 each including a complimentary chocolate. It's hard to choose just one though and extra chocolates are $1.40 each.
Also on offer are cakes, scones, biscuits and so on.

The prices of chocolates at Hahndorf's are comparable to many of the other chocolate shops around Melbourne, if not a little cheaper.

As for whom has the best tasting chocolate, that's difficult for me to say as a first timer to Hahndorf's, and the fact I only tried one chocolate out of a possible 70 chocolate varieties.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, it's a difficult job trying to find the best chocolate!

Hahndorf's Fine Chocolates are dotted throughout Melbourne with 10 stores in total, for your nearest store have a look here .

If you go Hahndorf's in Montrose on a day that is not raining it's next to the Montrose Community Playground which is our children's favourite at the moment.

Enjoy your Hahndorf's chocolates!
