Inspired and educated by German chocolatiers, Hahndorfs opened their first store in North Balwyn, Melbourne in 2001. The store was the first café style chocolate shop producing chocolate for customers to relax, enjoy a coffee, hot chocolate or milk shake and cakes while sampling the chocolates. & #8232 ;Watch those calories & #8232 ; bounding your way!

Hahndorfs have used the feedback from customers to develop the range to suit the customer's tastes. & #8232 ;They now sell over 70 products and their range is ever changing. & #8232 ;Since 2001 many shops have opened across Melbourne and Geelong offering the handmade truffles, chocolates, chocolate boxes and hampers. & #8232 ;

With such an extensive range, deciding which chocolate to pick is as compelling as choosing a new car. What's your fancy? Creams, truffles, licorice, honeycomb, pure couverture milk, dark or white chocolate? This was the question on everyone's lips. When it comes to chocolate only a queasy tummy seems to evoke discussion about chocolate limits.

The first time I went there I was with an under 10 boys basketball team. That was my first mistake. It's not rocket science to predict that free samples of the chocolate fillings on tap, chocolate milkshakes and free samples of chocolates and this age group is a volatile combination. It brings real meaning to the sayings 'just like kid's in a lolly shop' and 'like a bull in a china shop'!

Luckily the Greensborough store had a back section for our enthusiastic team. The outdoor seating near the main road may have been a tad too stressful. From their voracious attitude and boundless energy, no one would know they had just lost a game. Our team of pocket rockets would have worn a path in the flooring from their seats to the sample taps if we'd been there any longer. The staff was friendly and patient and helped us choose our own customized pack of chocolates for dark chocolate lovers.

Hahndorfs have ready-made gifts for a range of budgets.
Chocolate trays of five pieces start from $6.50, mini hampers for $9.50 up to $200. You can order on line and have them delivered but why would you when you also enjoy a coffee while sampling the chocolates with their compliments? & #8232 ;& #8232 ;

My advice is to savour the moment, it's nice to relax with a hot chocolate ($4) or oversized milk shake ($5.50) and maybe a Devonshire cream truffle without having to stop the little ones from falling off their chair or bouncing off the wall from an overdose of sugar. It sounds selfish because Babyccino's are only 90c but I think an adults only session is in order. You can purchase a pastry for lunch and really pig out in peace. I admit it's hard not to be tempted to dart between the peppermint cream and orange cream samples but it is possible to show a little restraint… maybe.
