Created by local artists working with the Hahndorf Academy, the annual Hahndorf Winter Lantern Festival is the culmination of a seven-week community workshop programme based at the Hahndorf Institute and Hahndorf Academy. It features an opening night concert on Friday 23rd August, then a festival and lantern parade in the grounds of the Hahndorf Academy from 3pm on Saturday 24th August.
If you'd like to help, lantern workshops are being held in the supper-room at the Hahndorf Institute every Saturday afternoon from the 27th July from 1pm - 3.30pm until the festival, or head to the website to chip in a donation to help keep the main event free for everyone.
The opening night concert on Friday the 23rd features Allye Sinclair and the Inkling Quartet (and introducing the Adelaide Flute Ensemble). The concert begins at 7pm at the Hahndorf Institute. Admission is $15 for the 'unwaged' and $20 for the 'waged' and FREE for school-age children.
It all leads up the exciting main event when over a hundred candle-lit lanterns gather at 5.30 pm for the parade and a fire mural lights up the night. The Hahndorf Town Band will lead the parade through the grounds of St Michael's School and down Balhannah Road to the grounds of the Academy.
Make sure to arrive early to spend some time at the Academy and check out the German migration museum and also the modern art gallery featuring contemporary visual art and a special collection of Sir Hans Heysen's drawings.
