Visiting Hahndorf doesn't have to be an expensive experience. It certainly can be done on a budget. Personally, I don't really see the need to fork out heaps of money to go on tour to Hahndorf when you can easily do it yourself for approximately a fifth of the cost or less.

Adelaide Metro runs buses to and from Hahndorf every day. Bus routes 841F and 860F operate on weekdays and bus route T843 operates on weekends. If that is too many numbers to recall, then just remember this one bus route 864 which operates all seven days of the week. These buses conveniently leave the city from multiple stops along Currie, Grenfell and Pulteney Streets. Fares vary depending on when you want to travel (what day and time) and whether you are using a Metrocard or Metroticket. But regardless the most you would pay is $10 for a return trip. You could pay as little as $3.88 if you decide to travel using the Metrocard either between 9.01am and 3pm on weekdays or anytime on Sundays.

Once you arrive in Hahndorf, there are quite a number of things you can see and do. Browse the many quaint little shops along its picturesque main street - art, craft, antiques, toys, cuckoo clocks, candles, leather wares, souvenirs, lollies, chocolates and so on. Discover its history and heritage by following the Hahndorf Heritage Walk map. Visit the Hahndorf Academy which is a hub of creativity, heritage and culture (entry is free). Or challenge yourself to a cheap round of mini golf at Hahndorf Mini Golf for only $6. There's also a playground at the Pioneer Memorial Gardens to keep the kids occupied.

When hunger strikes, choose from one of the many restaurants, cafes and bakeries. Head to Otto's Bakery for very reasonably priced pies, pasties, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries, slices, etc (approximately $5). Or check out the value for money all-you-can-eat buffet at the Hahndorf Old Mill Hotel . To top it off Hahndorf Sweets sells really large slices of delicious fudge. You can get any three for just $10.

If you're into photographing quirky things then look out for the panda, the sheep and dog, the upside down legs and the chair as well as Geppetto and Pinocchio. You might also like a different kind of a family photo in front of the German Arms Hotel.

Hahndorf has recently been awarded the third most popular regional tourist destination in Australia - so what are you waiting for?
