Two passionate South Australian food and wine experts have been running this very special restaurant in the main street of Hahndorf for nearly two years. Named after the two founders of Hahndorf, Dirk Hahn and Thomas Hamlin, exclusively feature simply prepared and beautifully presented South Australian produce.

is housed in a heritage 1800s cottage with stone walls, wooden floors and a cosy feel. The front balcony is a great spot to watch the world go by, but step inside to escape the hustle and bustle. Get out of the heat in summer (or cold in winter) and admire the local art that adorns the walls while enjoying their unique and artfully prepared menu.

The menu is based on sharing plates. I don't know about you but I don't mind this style of menu, especially when the whole thing just screams 'try me'!

First up for us was the South Australian Selection platter for two. It's hard to pinpoint the standout but I reckon the warm sourdough and the tiny Coriole olives are my favourite. The smooth and earthy hummus was readily devoured by the kids. The chevre cheese is sharp and creamy and makes an excellent counterpoint to the rest of the platter. Honestly, who doesn't love pork and fennel salami (in small doses)? A fresh little salad, a scattering of crunchy almonds along with some fresh and dried fruit tops it all off deliciously.

The venison carpaccio is a beautiful looking dish and worth trying just to be adventurous. For me, carpaccio is about texture and this one has texture in spades. It's a collection of the simple flavours of Hahndorf venison, horseradish cream, native currant salsa and muntrie berries. I enjoyed it immensely but stick with the olive plate if you're looking for a flavour punch.

The baked gnocchi is warming and hearty. The sauce of roasted capsicum, warrigal and blistered tomatoes smothers the gnocchi and slices of chorizo perfectly. It's topped with slivers of parmesan and our kids demolished it.

Let's not forget the crispy potatoes. Whatever you do, don't forget the crispy potatoes with lemon-myrtle mayo. I'm serious.

The drinks list has something for everyone and every occasion. There's wide range of wines, beers, gins and cocktails from South Australia at the bar alongside excellent coffee and tea, Bickford's sodas and BESA 100% South Australian juices.

isn't a brew haus or a hot-dog stall but isn't super expensive either and the share platter options are great value. The menu is a celebration of local ingredients and suppliers that will tempt your taste-buds with something different while staying true to local produce. We'll remember our delicious lunch for a long time. Desserts and cheeseboards are available. Just ask the excellent staff on the day.

Head up to Hahndorf and visit from 12 – 9 pm Thursday to Sunday (11 pm Sat and Sun). Light meals and drinks are served all day. Lunch menu is from 12 pm – 3 pm while the dinner menu runs between 5.30 pm – 9 pm.
