This August, Mundaring Arts Centre is proudly presenting Habits of Horses , a community arts project celebrating the historical and cultural significance of the relationship between humans and horses.This unique arts project consists of an exciting series of workshops, exhibitions and events which give the wider public the opportunity to learn new art skills from senior artists and artisans, undertake new experiences and get up close and personal with these beautiful animals which have been such an important part of our history.

At the centre of the arts project is a community Open Day on Sunday 20th August 2017, from 10am to 4pm. Held at Mundaring Hall & Sculpture Park, this festival-style celebration of horses and arts practice features free-to-the-public spectacles and activities to delight and engage people from all walks of life.Unmissable highlights include an outdoor exhibition of large-scale sculpture, a live music stage, pony rides, horse petting, whip cracking, a demonstration by the 10th Light Horse Regiment, poetry readings, a book sale, international food vans and activities such as saddling competitions, horse shoe quoits and the Great Hobby Horse Race .

Participants in the Great Hobby Horse Race will be invited to bring along their own hobby horse, which can be made at the Avon Descent Art Tent on Sunday 6th August 2017, created at home, or decorated at the Open Day. Artists will be on the green from 10am inviting people to decorate a hobby horse or a dressage top hat, and offering horse inspired face-painting. Great Hobby Horse Races will be held throughout the day in a number of heats with the Grand Prize Magic Millions Race held between 2pm and 3pm at the Sculpture Park. Join in the fun, jumping over a series of hand-crafted hobby horse jumps, made by local artist Denise Brown. Participants go in the running to win great prizes, awarded for imaginativeness and flair.

The Sculpture Park Horse-in-Stall exhibition will also launch on Open Day. This exhibition of large-scale sculptures sees prominent WA artists Tony Jones, Claire Bailey, Denise Brown and Cecile Williams tackle the theme of human interaction with horses on a dramatic scale set amongst the picturesque surroundings of Mundaring's favourite community park.In addition to the outdoor exhibition, visitors can attend free art exhibitions exploring the cultural and historical significance of horses at the Mundaring Arts Centre and the Mundaring District Museum. "There will be something for everyone, a great day out to rediscover what Mundaring has to offer and develop a new relationship with horses," says Mundaring Arts Centre Director, Jenny Haynes.

HABITS OF HORSES - EXHIBITIONS Habits of Horses: Serious Horsing Around will be showcased in the Mundaring Arts Centre's Gallery 1 from Friday 11th August until Sunday 10th September 2017, bringing together some of WA's most exciting contemporary artists: Madeleine Clear, Marcia Espinosa, Indra Geidans, Jan Griffiths, Tony Jones, Paul Kaptein, Theo Koning, Matt McVeigh, Andrew Nicholls, Anna Louise Richardson, Sue Starcken and Yuko Takahashi. Presenting diverse interpretations ranging from sculptural, life-sized and two-dimensional artworks, the group show collects personal histories and cultural insights, marrying the historical with the contemporary. The Horse Tales community exhibition will run concurrently in the adjacent gallery and will include a 'paddock' of sculpted hay horses; a wall-mounted mob of wild brumbies made from found objects; small sculptures, rosettes and jewellery incorporating horse hair. These hand-crafted art objects were created by school children, teenagers and adults during a series of workshops in the lead-up to the project.

In addition to the exhibitions in Mundaring, the Midland Junction Arts Centre will host Horse Drawn , an exhibition celebrating the equine form through traditional representation and contemporary digital drawing methods; and Vahana: Vehicle of the Gods , in which celebrated Bangalore-based photographer Clare Arni presents a series of photographs detailing the making of terracotta horses and Hindu votive offerings for the Ayyanar festival in India. Both exhibitions will be on display from Sunday 27th August to Saturday 23rd September 2017.The Midland Junction Arts Centre will come alive with Tamil dancing and food on Sunday 10th September 2017 for the unveiling of the community Totemic Horses and a large-scale terracotta horse created by artist in residence, Indian potter Kasirajan Subbaiah.

In partnership with the Mundaring Historical Centre, Hoofprints in the Hills – Historical Exhibition will run from Sunday 20th August to Thursday 22nd February 2018. This exhibition celebrates the horse and the varied ways the people of the local area have interacted with these incredible animals. Whether used for ploughing, warfare, transportation, entertainment or therapy, horses have been integral in shaping and enriching the Shire of Mundaring's past and present.Mundaring Arts Centre has also partnered with the Mundaring Camera Club to present an exhibition at the KSP Library in Boya, the Habits of Horses Photographic Exhibition , which will run from Tuesday 1st August to Saturday 30th September 2017, displaying a selection of photographs of horse scenes throughout Perth, capturing the essence of horse industries.All are welcome to enjoy Habits of Horses and its the diverse range of workshops, exhibitions and events.
