Ha-Lu takes Japanese cuisine to another dimension, encouraging a Tapas style dining experience where a number of dishes can be ordered and shared. We ordered a total of ten dishes between five (excluding dessert) and this turned out to be the perfect amount.

The first thing I noticed was the sense of warmth created by the dim lighting and relatively small interior. After being seated, the friendly waitress explained the unique style of dining and left us to decide our evening meal. We ordered a combination of starters and mains, the favourites included the crumbed camembert cheese, grilled miso patagonian toothfish, fried root vegetables and slow poached egg salad and the foil baked salmon and scallops.

As you will have most likely noticed, the menu does not conform to the traditional Japanese cuisine of sushi, udon and ramen, instead creating a customised selection of dishes that experiment with familiar Japanese flavours.

Our food was served surprisingly quickly, however there was clearly no compromise on the presentation. We all enjoyed the refreshingly modern and interactive style of dining, with the opportunity to sample all ten dishes, and compare which was most delicious- a surprisingly difficult decision.

The mains proved to be so marvellous that we couldn't resist sampling their dessert menu. The green tea ice cream, mango ice cream, home made cream caramel and white chocolate, roast tea and berry pannacotta & ume plum gelee were the perfect dishes to top off a fantastic performance by the chefs and workers at Ha-Lu.

This is a restaurant that I would highly recommend and can guarantee you that it will live up to your expectations in the essential categories of food, service and ambience. To try it out for yourself, head down to Shop 4/401 Oxford St, Mt Hawthorn and make sure you book in advance, because a place like this is bound to fill up quickly.
