During our recent travels through the New England Highway, we stopped by a town called Guyra. Located at 4330 feet above sea-level, Guyra is the highest and coldest town in the New England Tablelands. The town is famous for its beef, potato and fat lambs and every year in January, they hold a Guyra Lamb and Potato Festival.

Main street of town
Across the railway line from the park is the town centre with beautiful old buildings along the main street. There is a hotel, a cafe, a post office and other shops.

Mother of Ducks Lagoon Reserve

Bird watching platform
On the western edge of the town is a very beautiful nature reserve called Mother of Ducks Lagoon Nature Reserve. The lagoon is part of a volcano crater and is about 14km in circumference. There are easy walking trails in the reserve and a wooden boardwalk brings you to the birdwatching platform for a good view of the lagoon. Signs in the sheltered lookout tell of the many birdlife to look out for. In the reserve are picnic areas with many tables and chairs and a sheltered BBQ.
