This year 2014 is the 14th year of the Guringai Festival. This is to celebrate Australia's First People's culture in the Northern Sydney Region. The festival is between 26 May and 13 July, 2014.

With curiosity, I went to North Sydney to see a festival event one Saturday in Civic Park.

Arriving at the Civic Park, there were directions pointing to an exhibition called Changeable Art – Photographic and Indigenous Art. It was in the North Sydney Community Centre. There were lots of photos illustrating how indigenous people live in remote Aboriginal communities. Moreover, there were some artworks and handicrafts created by remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

After appreciating the works in the exhibition, I stepped out of the centre and arrived at the back where I found the traditional native grass weaving workshop being taught by Karleen Green.

Making use only lomandra and raffia grass, we created the coiled baskets or pot/cup coaster. All of us enjoyed the workshop so much. Now the craft is at my home and has become a special cup coaster.

This workshop reminded me as to how easy it is to make something useful, even if the materials around us are limited.
