High teas are either classic, historic, fancy or extravagant.
Gunners Barracks is a historic location in Georges Heights, Mosman, and has splendid views of the harbour. This gorgeous location offers a wonderful high tea that is popular amongst locals and visitors. It's my go to experience for when I have visitors coming to Sydney from overseas, as it stands for what Sydney is known for best, beautiful harbour views, great location and a wonderful classic high tea.
On a warm spring day when Sydney was at it's best, I was at Gunner's Barracks for high tea with a group of overseas visitors. With the standard 2 hour seating, we had plenty of time to enjoy the place, the surroundings and the high tea itself. Choices for high tea at Gunners Barracks include traditional high tea or varieties of sparkling high teas and plenty of canapes, sweet treats, scones and sandwiches that come along with it. Our group was vegetarian therefore we opted for a vegetarian high tea with a children's high tea for the teeny tiny ones. We also had a great selection of teas to pick from and the teapots could also be refilled with water on request.
The high tea selection itself is plentiful. Set on beautiful china in 3 tiers, and a separate selection of hot food on a plate, we were spoilt for choice at all times. The service was great and we had barely anything to complain about. Amidst the beautiful uninterrupted views, I couldn't help but notice the grand samovar at the corner of the room for hot water. A touch of tradition in between the historic yet modern setting.
I wandered around the high tea setting into the large grand room to discover an old grandfather clock and some beautiful seating and tapestry. The courtyard that enveloped the grand room has some cannons on display and around the corner was a balcony with some uninterrupted views across the harbour.
The high tea setting itself is quite pretty, with tables of 2 lined up against the windows and the larger tables spread across the room. I reckon this would make a great wedding gift or a mother's day gift for a party of 2. Traditional, elegant and a touch of history.
Add this to your 'Discover Sydney' list. It's timeless and elegant.
Down the steep slope there is a great high tea setting with unmissable views.
