Picture calm, shimmering blue water with a quaint beach and lots of parkland. Sounding like a nice summer hang-out? Gunamatta Bay in Cronulla has a warm, relaxing atmosphere and is ideal for a day out with family and friends.
It is located right next to Cronulla train station meaning it's easily reached via public transport. It also has a car-park but this tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Bring the whole family for the day, puppies included.
The spacious park has picnic benches, sheltered communal spaces, and barbecues, which I think are central to summer. Bring your own supplies. Or, visit one of the supermarkets or many take-away food shops in walking distance, just on the other side of the station. I personally love fruit smoothies to sip on by the sea.
Gunamatta Bay is a low-wave area, ideal for snorkeling, canoeing, sports like water-polo, and of course, going for a dip to cool off from the heat. With an enclosed swimming area, and an expanse of shallow water it is ideal for toddlers to embrace their inner water-babies.
You'll notice a jetty towering over this swimming space, forming a ring over it. It's fun to swim under, and several thrill-seekers take the plunge from upon it. Be sure to jump with caution. Many also chill out on the jetties and pontoons beneath.
A small stretch of sand lines the swimming area, which becomes even cozier upon high tide. If you're looking for more sand to dig your toes into and soak up the sun, there are wider stretches on the other side of the jetty. Of course, the sprawling park offers many grassy patches great to set up camp for the day.
On weekends you'll see many spending their time off at Gunamatta Bay. The diversity of people simply relaxing and having fun, I find, adds to the warm, buzzing atmosphere of this spot. Even on sunny weekdays, those with the time make the most of it here. I love having this scenic bay reminiscent of a holiday island so close to home.
