Angelique Cassimatis (King Kong, Mary Poppins, Rocky Horror Picture Show) epitomises the phrase 'pocket rocket' in the one woman musical Guilty Pleasures that's now playing for a limited time at the Powerhouse's Visy Theatre. She shines in a myriad of wicked roles, portraying strong, brave, beaten, bold, vulnerable and passionate women and girls, all driven to acts of murder.
She adeptly tackles onstage costume and accent changes, energetic choreography by Amy Campbell (King Kong, SYTYCD) and darkly funny original music by Hugo Chiarella and Robert Tripolino (DreamSong). The onstage musicians and minimalist set mostly consisting of suitcases add a Brechtian air to the show, which is probably just as well given the dark tales these women have to tell.
The stories within Guilty Pleasures come from the pen of Josh Robson (Rob Guest Endowment, Les Miserables). One might expect with such tales of spousal abuse, cheating husbands, sex slavery, shady mob connections and murders in the show to leave deflated, saddened or depressed. On the contrary, the women's triumphs over their oppressors and the humour drenched songs and dialogue have you rooting for these murderesses and celebrating the demise of the real bad guys.
The opening night audience was laughing all the way through the show and sprung to their feet in appreciation at the end of the almost hour long spectacle. Not for the faint-hearted but definitely for fans of dark comedy and great songs, Guilty Pleasures only has four shows to go – Saturday and Sunday the 24th and 25th you can catch a matinee or evening show. So you'd better act fast if you don't want to miss it.
