A Day Out in Guildford

I took a trip to Guildford one day, having passed through the suburb a couple of times on the replacement bus service and seeing the potential of an interesting day out (who knew the unreliability of Transperth could have positive repercussions?).
Visitng Guildford feels like stepping back in time from some of the more modern parts of the city and CBD's more modern concepts and architecture – but in a good way. There seems a lot of history in this suburb; from it's colonial gaol, which is open to visitors, to its much more majestic-looking post office, everything just looks a bit old.
Even the high street is littered with
antiques and thrift stores and; even more charmingly for a true English girl like myself, there are several old-fashioned tearooms along the main street that serve fancy tea and even do deals on Devonshire tea with a choice of different flavoured handmade scones. I enjoyed the pumpkin ones most myself.
What I enjoyed most about the tearooms, however, was the fact that stopping by them for a little rest ended up being a long stop, as I got chatting to friendly staff and felt as comfortable in the setting as if I was in my grandparents' living room.
Also amongst the tearooms and
antique shops there is a quaint little theatre that fits its surroundings well: vintage in appearance and showing classic shows. I did not watch a play there, but I would be tempted to if I had more time to spend there.
Finally, Guildford is also home to the
Museum of Natural History , but that's a review for another day.
