ANZAC was the name given to a combined force of First Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Army troops who landed on Turkey's Gallipoli Peninsula at around dawn on Sunday, the 25th day of April in 1915, only nine months after the outbreak of World War I. For more than one hundred years, on every 25th day of April, ANZAC Day has been observed in Australia and New Zealand, becoming an honoured and sacred day of solemn remembrance for all Australian and New Zealand men and women who have fought and died in wars.

The following ode comes from
For the Fallen, a poem written by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon. It was published in London in the
Winnowing Fan: Poems of the Grey War in 1914. The verse which became the League Ode has been used in commemoration services in Australia since 1921.
'They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.'

For those readers, like me, who may be wondering what a ‘Gunfire Breakfast’# is, with thanks to Dr. Google’s AI, here is an in-depth explanation:
“The gunfire breakfast is a long-standing Anzac Day tradition, evolving from the British military custom of serving troops an early cup of tea before a parade or battle, sometimes with rum-laced coffee to give them ‘liquid courage’. The term ‘gunfire’ is thought to have originated from the morning gun fired in garrison towns, marking the start of the day and preparing soldiers for the day ahead. Today, the gunfire breakfast is a social event where people come together to remember and honour those who have served, often held after the Dawn Service and before the Anzac Day March. The Gunfire Breakfast is a symbol of the Anzac spirit, which is about remembrance, respect and community. Besides the Gunfire Breakfast, other traditional Anzac Day activities include the Dawn Service, the Anzac Day March, and the wearing of a poppy as a symbol of remembrance.”
