If you love fresh, tasty, Asian greens, then this little project is for you. The next time you buy a bunch of pak choy, bok choy, or any type of Chinese cabbage, chop off the base and plant it. In a little over three months, you'll have fresh greens to harvest from your own garden.

Step 1:

Cut approximately 2-3 cm from the base of each plant and use the leaves as usual for your cooking. Add about 1 cm of water to the bottom of a shallow dish and place the bases in it (as shown below). Place the dish on a window ledge or somewhere sunny, taking care to make sure that the spot does not get too hot. Asian greens are typically grown in the cooler months.

Step 2:

Within days, little baby leaves should start sprouting from the centre of each base.

Step 3:

At about 1 week, plant the bases in a pot with good soil or find a suitable place in the garden. In the cooler months, a sunny spot is ideal. In summer, cooler, shadier areas with the morning sun are best. Water the plants in and add some slow-release fertilizer if you wish. Water the plants each day.

Step 4:

When the plants are large enough, harvest some leaves and enjoy your homegrown produce! You can either harvest the whole plants or just pick enough of the outer leaves for the day.

It's a satisfying activity that you can engage in with young children.
